Obesity

Every day, close to 1000 americans die of obesity related problems. Obesity has become the epidemic of our generation. We spend as a nation more than $117 billion in overweight related issues. It is by far the fastest growing health problem in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 100 million adults in the US are overweight or obese, that is close to two thirds of the total adult population. Of this group, 11 million suffer from severe obesity.

Obsesity is defined as an excess of body fat or adipose tissue in relation to lean body mass. Measuring the exact amount of a person's body fat is not easy. A measurement commonly used to assess health risks due to obesity and overweight is the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the height in meters squared. The english calculation is weight in pounds multiplied by 704.5 and divided by squared height in inches.

According to the American Obesity Association, obese individuals have 50-100 increased risk of death when compared to non overweight individuals. It is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States.

Morbid Obesity

The term morbid obesity refers to patients who generally weigh at least twice or 100 pounds more than his or her ideal weight or has a BMI of 40 or more.

Considerations

Medical problems commonly resulting from untreated obesity include the following:

High blood pressure Coronary artery disease
Stroke Hypertension
Diabetes Gall stones
Cancer Obstructive sleep apnea
Respiratory problems Poor female reproductive health
Depression Psychological disorders
Osteoarthritis

Causes

Hereditary
Individuals whose families have obese members are at a higher risk if being obese. Genetic research has shown that metabolism, fat-burning mechanisms, and fullness sensation is different with obese people than with non-obese people.

Energy balance
The law of conservation of energy also applies to the human body. Whenever more energy (food) enters the body than it leaves, that energy is stored by the body as fatty tissue. Metabolism plays an important role as it determines how much energy is burned by your body for a given activity level.

Social habits
Certain habits that are related to culture, education, and personal habits can affect the energy balance. Consuming high-calorie snacks, liquid calories and leading sedentary lives, all lead to obesity.

Metabolic disorders
Certain functions in your body can also sabotage your metabolism. The thyroid gland for example, when malfunctioning, can affect your metabolism and cause your body to have an uneven energy balance, leading to obesity.

Psychological factors
Anything in the human psyche that leads people to overeat can be considered as a psychological factor.
